Welcome! to the 2005 project website of the Fleming College Sustainable Building Design & Construction Program. We are excited to be the first class in this new, leading-edge certificate program being offered at the Haliburton School of the Arts campus, in beautiful Haliburton, Ontario. During the course of this 20-week program, we were fully involved in the design and construction process, giving us both theory and hands-on experience in sustainable building and renewable energy. Our building project was the new Haliburton 4C's Food Bank and Lily Ann Thrift Store. It was a cooperative project involving the Haliburton Campus of Fleming College, The Municipality of Dysart et al and the Haliburton 4C's organization. The 1800 square foot building incorporates sustainable building design, materials and construction techniques -- features that will lessen the building's impact on the environment, lower operating costs and offer increased health for building occupants. The building itself is one of the most sustainable projects ever built in Canada. Based on an earth-bag foundation with used carpet insulation, it features clay plastered straw bale walls, a rammed earth floor, grid-intertied PV (photovoltaic) system, solar hot water heating supplemented by a propane boiler, energy efficient windows, passive solar design, natural daylighting, passive ventilation, and many other unique features. We hope that our experience will help educate, inspire and motivate you to make more sustainable choices in your life. Join us as we undertake to build a better future ... |
