Acknowledging the Territory

We acknowledge that the land that Fleming College is on, is the traditional territory of the Michi Saagig Anishnaabe, people of the North shore of Lake Ontario and its tributaries. Fleming College Campus locations are covered by eighteen treaties and agreements that the Michi Saagig Anishnaabe participated in from 1781 to 1923.

Fleming College has settled on this land and recognizes that the region is now home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and the importance of respecting the voices and history of Indigenous communities. We are grateful to work on this land and will continue to build authentic and reciprocal relationships.

Annual Kawartha Forest Woodland Expo Returns to Fleming's Frost Campus

Lindsay, ON (March 28, 2024) - Combat climate change, sharpen your chainsaw skills and learn more about the trees on your own property during the 31st annual Kawartha Forest Woodland Expo on April 6.

This one-day event is hosted by Fleming College and the Ontario Woodlot Association.

The Kawartha Woodland Expo is designed to educate property owners and students about the role of forests big and small on private property.

Registration is $40 per person, and $30 for high school and post-secondary students. Registration fees are waived for the first 50 high school students who sign up.

Visit here to register.

Registration includes attendance in two workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Lunch, coffee and snacks are also included.

These workshops have been designed by the faculty, staff and alumni with Fleming College’s School of Environmental and Natural Resources, with the goal of providing attendants with the resources and skills to maintain small woodlots on their property, all while providing insight into the natural world right on their doorsteps.
Topics cover everything from chainsaw basics and lumber scaling to tree identification, mapping woodlands, helping endangered species and the joy of forest bathing.

A complete list of all workshops can be found here.

There are limited spots in each workshop, and sign-up is done on a first-come, first-served basis. Personal protective equipment is required for workshops. Please bring your own equipment if you can. Equipment will be provided for those unable to do so.

The Expo also includes a silent auction, exhibits and live music. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. Winners of the silent auction and a chainsaw draw will be announced at 3 p.m.

Fleming College Expands Forestry Programs

Lindsay, ON (March 11, 2024) - Two new and unique Forestry programs at Fleming College are preparing students for rewarding careers in a growing industry.

Fleming’s new Forestry Equipment Operator certificate is the only one of its kind offered in Ontario. This 15-week course provides students with introductory training in heavy forestry equipment operation, forestry principles and proper safety techniques.

Providing students with hands-on learning opportunities, the course also focuses on preventive maintenance, minor repairs, forest fire preparedness, forestry operations and harvest systems.

Applied learning is a big part of Fleming’s Forestry Techniques program. This two-semester course teaches students the skills they need to conduct field work and forest management operations in the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence and Boreal Forest regions. Students graduate ready to move directly into the workforce.

Fleming has also reworked its Forestry Technician-Adaptive Practices program. The new curriculum exceeds provincial standards, teaching traditional forestry skills and studying the technical functions of creating, managing, conserving, and restoring sustainable forests in public and private operations. There is also a focus on environmental, social and economic changes within the forestry industry.

This program also includes a paid co-op, providing students with networking opportunities as they meet and work alongside professionals within the forestry industry.

All three programs are located at Fleming’s Frost Campus in Lindsay, ON.

Fleming College is a leading educator in the forestry sector. For more than five decades industry leaders have tapped into Fleming’s forestry graduates for new hiring opportunities, due to Fleming’s reputation for producing competent and skilled graduates. Fleming’s “boots-on-the-ground” approach to its Forestry programs ensures graduates are well-prepared to succeed in rewarding careers.

Fleming College Supports Menstrual Equity

Peterborough, ON (March 8, 2024) - Fleming College is celebrating the generous donation of $10,000 worth of reusable menstrual products from Aisle for Fleming students in Peterborough, Lindsay, and Haliburton.

Beginning March 4, donated Aisle products, including reusable panties, pads, and liners in a variety of sizes XS to 5XL, will be available to students through the Fleming Student Administrative Council (SAC) at the Sutherland Campus and the Frost Student Association (FSA) at the Frost Campus.

Based in Vancouver, BC, Aisle is a Certified B Corp known for being the original creators of sustainable and gender-inclusive period underwear and cloth menstrual pads. Dedicated to promoting menstrual equity around the world, Aisle donates two percent of their sales toward supporting individuals and non-profits to address period poverty and gender equity.

Fleming College, SAC and the FSA have been offering free period products in college bathrooms for several years. Fleming students can also attend a series of free workshops with The Period Purse, which aims to reduce period stigma and create menstrual equity through access, education, and advocacy, and providing free period products for all.

To ensure all Fleming students experience equitable access, products will also be available through Indigenous Student Services (Peterborough and Lindsay), Haliburton School of Art + Design, and our Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada program in Peterborough Square.

We want to thank all our distribution partners for their dedication to students, without them this initiative would not have been possible.
