Program Highlights

Do you want to pursue a career in health care or forensic sciences? The General Arts and Science - College Health Science Option can help you to acquire the necessary background, improve your skills, as well as enhance your qualifications for entry into college programs in these fields.

This option of the General Arts and Science program is designed to prepare students for entry into college programs such as:

• Massage Therapy
• Paramedic
• Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant
• Practical Nursing
• Biotechnology Technologist Forensics
• Fitness and Health Promotion

Fleming College has reserved space in the above-noted programs for qualified graduates of this program. For consideration in this category, graduates must have achieved an average of 70% or higher over the duration of the College Health Science Option. If there are more applications from graduates with 70% or higher than reserved seats available, a selection process based on an average of overall marks will take place.

Please note: To be considered for your program of choice, your Ontario College application must be received by the Equal Consideration Application Deadline date.

A strong foundation in Science, Math and English is highly applicable for students who wish to pursue studies and a career in health care or forensic biotechnology. In this two-semester preparatory program, you will take core courses in Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English. You will also take college-level courses to help you become a competent communicator and problem solver, with the critical analytical, creative and logical thinking skills needed in the workplace.

This certificate option provides the essential courses for many high school graduates and mature students to gain entry or improve their prospects of pursuing a health or forensic sciences program and career. Once completed, the General Arts and Science - College Health Science Option provides a strong foundation for success in ongoing health care or forensic science studies. All graduates of this program receive an Ontario College Certificate. In addition, you can earn from two to six credits towards your subsequent college diploma, depending upon your program choice.

Minimum Admission Requirements

OSSD with the majority of credits at the College (C) and Open (O) level, including:

• 2 College (C) English courses (Grade 11 or Grade 12)
• 1 College (C) Grade 11 or Grade 12 science course (Chemistry, Physics or Biology)

When (C) is the minimum course level for admission, (U) or (U/C) courses are also accepted.

Mature Students - If you are 19 years of age before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD,  you can write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test  to assess your eligibility for admission. Additional testing or academic upgrading may be neccessary to meet specific course requirements for this program.

All applicants will be required to achieve course credit in any mandatory sciences, through Secondary School or through Academic Upgrading programs.

Additional Costs

In addition you should plan to spend at least $700 per year for books and supplies.

College Communications for the Helping Professions

Course Number: COMM079

Communications for the Helping Professions, a mandatory Communications course, focuses on improving reading and writing skills through a number of assignments related to the helping professions. Students will demonstrate skills in summary and essay writing as well as research techniques, including appropriate documentation of sources. The principles of style, structure, content, and mechanics constitute the overall framework of the course.

Biology I

This course provides students with the opportunity for in-depth study of the concepts and processes associated with biological systems. Students will study theory and conduct applied investigation in the areas of cellular structure and function, human body organization and homeostasis, as well as control and coordination of body functions by the nervous system.

Critical Awareness

Course Number: GNED010

A student-centred dialogue marks this course's unique learning experience. The dialogue centres on the meaning and make-up of the students' lives by focusing on existentially relevant situations (as captured in evocative pictures and words) that constitute the lived experience of the students' world. With these pictures and words in mind, students carefully organize seminars (their student-centred dialogue seminars) that allow the students to take charge of their learning-its process and content. Through the simple yet revealing act of critical listening, and questioning, students becoming critically aware of their role in the learning process, especially the art of reading people, including themselves.

Math for Health Sciences

Course Number: MATH069

Math for Health Sciences is a one semester course of study designed specifically for students in the College Health Science option of the General Arts and Science Program. The course is designed to help the student master the skills of basic math, use measurements systems, and develop problem solving strategies required in health-science courses. The topics covered in this course will have relevant applications and an emphasis on interpretations and problem solving. The topics will be: arithmetic and algebra review, equations and formulae manipulation, ratio and proportions, percents, metric system and measurements, linear and non-linear graphing and basic statistical measurements.

Principles of Chemistry I

Course Number: SCIE087

Principles of Chemistry I is an introductory general chemistry course. This chemistry course will prepare the students in the General Health Sciences certificate program for study and employment in the various health sciences fields. The course provides knowledge and understanding of the basic chemistry principles and topics covered will include matter and energy, measurement, chemical bonding, nomenclature, and chemical reactions.

Biology II

This course provides students with the opportunity for continued study of the concepts and processes associated with the human body. Students will study theory and conduct applied investigation to the many organ systems of the body, including cardiovascular, respiratory, immune, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Human development, genetics, and applications of biotechnology will also be discussed.

Communicating at Work for the Helping Professions

In this course you will continue to develop your communication skills, with specialized focus on how communication and the written word works in community, education and health based professions. This course is designed to help you better understand the communication demands of your eventual career employment. You will continue to reinforce speaking, writing, reading, and listening techniques common to the expectations demanded by the work place of your career choice by applying, at a more sophisticated level, principles of style, structure, mechanics and techniques (for orals).

Human Growth and Development

This course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of the normal patterns of growth and development at various stages within the life cycle from infancy through to old age. The major theories of development will be examined to enhance understanding of this field of study.

Introduction to Self-Directed Learning

This course explores the concept of Self-Directed Learning (SDL). Included is a detailed analysis of what SDL is and a clarification of the student's own capacities as a self-directed learner. This is a core course in the General Arts and Science Program because the ability to learn on one's own is a central component of the life-long learning process.

Principles of Chemistry II

Principles of Chemistry II is a General Chemistry course with a laboratory component that follows Principles of Chemistry I. This course has been designed to prepare the students in the General Health Sciences certificate program for study and employment in various health sciences fields. This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of energy changes and rates of reaction, chemical systems and equilibrium, electrochemistry, and a brief introduction to organic chemistry.
