Program Highlights

The proposed Sustainable Renovations program is a 20-week, compressed, Ontario College Certificate designed to prepare graduates for employment in the design, commissioning and construction of sustainable renovations. It is modeled on the successful Sustainable Building Design and Construction program concept. You will work on a ‘real world’ renovation project that embodies a wide variety of sustainable systems and materials, in order to better understand the complexity and challenges of green renovation.

You will learn about existing buildings, their systems and components, as well as the administrative aspects of providing renovation services, such as permits and contracts. The program will focus on skill development in sustainable approaches to building renovations techniques, and the use of green building materials.
While the program is based at our Haliburton Campus, your project work may take place within the geographical region.

Career Opportunities

Homeowners are leading the ‘green’ renovation market, and this field is widely acknowledged as a growth area. Sustainable or ‘green’ renovation is expected to become the dominant segment of the construction industry over the next 10-20 years. As a graduate of this program, you will be able to:

  •  assess existing buildings and design or specify a wide range of structural and mechanical retrofits.
  • carry out the actual construction and installation of these improvements,
  • or oversee the hiring and coordination of qualified installers.

The program will appeal to renovation contractors and sub-contractors already working in the renovation field, who are seeking to develop a green building focus, as well as to skilled tradespeople transitioning to their own business start-ups. Designers, architects and engineers wishing to learn more about sustainable alternatives and integrate them into their current practices will also find the program useful.
